Establishment of Mindfulness Practice
May 21st to July 9th. | Sundays 9 AM til 10:30
(see workshop description below)
This eight week series will meet once a week, Sunday mornings from 9 AM until 10:30, beginning May 21st, offered by William Kelley.
The class will source many of the various existing meditation guidebooks and methods to provide a step by step introduction to the practice of sitting mindfulness meditation, with the principal goal of enabling the beginner to establish a regular practice of their own. We will spend a couple introductory sessions talking about goals and benefits of practice, also touching on posture, preparation and flexibility, but we will quickly settle into a routine for each session consisting of discussion followed by either two timed periods of group sitting or one longer sit, depending on where we are in the schedule. Suggested topics will include (for instance) sitting with distracting thoughts and emotions, diet and exercise, intoxicants and addictions, cultivating mindful living “away from the cushion”, and a variety of quotations and parables from the enormous canon of our worlds' spiritual practices, and their applications to our time here and now. Participants may be at any level; experienced practitioners' input is welcome. Loose fitting comfortable clothing recommended, and those with mobility restrictions or unable to sit fully at floor level for physical reasons are also welcome to join.
“Do you have the patience to wait till your mind settles and the water is clear? Can you remain unmoving till the right action arises by itself?” --Tao Te Ching, translated by Stephen Mitchell
“When mindfulness is viewed through self-centered thought, there is confusion between the chatter of the mind and what is being observed. The fact becomes inseparable from the muddled thinking, and it is impossible to know how much of what we see is our projection.” --”stepping out of self-deception”, by Rodney Smith
SUGGESTED COST: ten dollars each week, or $70 in advance for the entire eight weeks. It was brought to my attention that many group sits out of tradition eschew fee or even donations; it's my view that we live in costly times, and offering a class with this level of structure and guidance should be compensated, but the proceeds are going entirely to studio rent and upkeep, as in William Kelley will not be taking any fee at all.
William Kelley had sporadic interest in meditation and Eastern spirituality until 2007, when he developed a disciplined practice of daily sitting. He enjoys sharing his enthusiasm for the practice of meditation; group sitting and discussion of meditation has been going on for thousands of years, why stop now?
